One such duo is C-UNIT, known for their highlife and Afrobeats sound. Their music addresses the struggles and small victories faced by the average Nigerian.
C-UNIT, comprised of brothers Onyedika Pascal Ike and Onyebuchi Anthony Ike, embarked on their musical journey not in a professional studio setting or under the glare of public attention. Their initial foray into music took place in their local church during their teenage years. This passion later developed in Jos, Plateau State, where they established a music group known as De Blinkz while still in secondary school. Following their graduation, they relocated to Lagos in 2006 to pursue their aspirations—a decision that resonates with many aspiring artists.
The journey for the duo proved to be quite challenging. Onyebuchi, one of the members, recalls, “There were instances when we had to suspend our musical pursuits and engage in driving a keke to sustain ourselves. We did not perceive this as shameful; rather, it was a necessary measure to remain viable. However, our aspiration remained unwavering.”
The essence of resilience now permeates the core of C-UNIT’s musical identity. In tracks such as “Reason Why” and “Winner for Me,” the group transcends mere performance; they engage in a form of documentation. Their lyrics delve into themes of hope, struggle, sacrifice, and the understated strength required to persevere in the face of adversity.
Ifeanyi Nwosu, the manager of the group, asserts that their grounded approach distinguishes them in the industry. He stated, “What C-UNIT is accomplishing is unique. The members of this group did not enter the music scene from privileged backgrounds. Their songs resonate with the sentiments of the average Nigerian, capturing the experiences of a young individual striving for success or a family man seeking a breakthrough.”
The 2024 single “Odieshi” further develops the artistic direction established by the artist. Although it features a lively rhythm and an engaging hook that may initially suggest it is merely a feel-good track, a more in-depth analysis of the lyrics reveals themes centered around faith, protection, and triumph over adversity.
“We aimed to portray a sense of joy in Odieshi, as our community continues to smile and celebrate even in challenging times,” states Onyedika. “This captures the essence of our resilience—persevering with dignity.”
The fanbase for this music is expanding significantly, spanning from market vendors in Lagos to students in Jos. This growth can be attributed not only to the engaging melodies but also to the authentic themes within the songs. This music recognizes individuals beyond mere statistics; it honors the experiences and journeys of its listeners rather than solely focusing on the outcome.
C-UNIT is currently establishing its position within the music industry, demonstrating that the art of storytelling in music remains vibrant and relevant. At a time when numerous Nigerians seek relatable content, their authentic, hustle-inspired highlife music may fulfill a significant demand among the populace.
“Not every song needs to focus on themes such as wealth or romantic relationships,” Nwosu states. “At times, the objective is simply to convey a sense of companionship and to remind individuals that they are not isolated in their experiences.”
